How about suggesting to them they put it on the back burner for a year and get them involved in CSE2012 and beyond

I have been watching this thread for a few weeks. I haven't applied for an entry, as I really don't have any spare time to build a cart at the moment. I would be interested though if the idea was put on the back burner until 2012.
I like Andy's idea and wonder whether Screwfix could be tempted to act as title sponsors for a series of races in the spring and early summer of next year, perhaps using Cairngorm as the final round/championship decider. If they were to adopt CSEx rules they would be likely to attract plenty of entries from people who know what they are doing

Well if they messed Stephen over Cairngorm X the way they have with potential competitors I don't think that would do Stephen or the event any good. Would be nice to have them on board as sponsors if they were prepared to let Stephen get on with the organisation.

There are a few things that need to be checked out : Ready built go-karts are strictly prohibited from the event. Entrants must provide a video of the build for publication. SrewFix provide sticker and stuff to decorate the cart - Advertising. General Rules and Regulation sheet states: Length = 2.5 metres width = 1.5 Metres Track = 0.8 Metres Maximum Weight = 100Kg Ground clearance = 100 mm minimum The rules are more or less as SCA stuff.
However the Top Secret' Entrants Pack (Their words) shows a Requirement of Maximum weight allowed as 150Kg.
The track could well be on grass with corners and a water splash.
Regional heats with first three carts getting to the Finals in Perth. Heat 5 on 3rd September 2011 at Surf the Turf, Maize Maze, Raines Hall Farm, Sedgwick, Cumbria.

There doesn't seem to be anything there that we didn't already know from their web site. Shouldn't be too hard to construct a video of us 'building' the bandit and the slammer. I somehow doubt they'll be in the position of being able to turn entrants away.

I am not so sure about that when Kemney Junior School managed to get 50 entrants to their short street event in May. The plans they have put out are basic stuff although there is no rope and plank. There are only 50 places available at each regional heat. Don't know quite how to make a video of building Runfree although I have plenty of stills of the process.

Kemnay was a community event run by the school so would be almost bound to get a lot of entries because the patents would support it. Screwfix is different and won't get anywhere near that level of support or commitment. Unless they are working hard pushing the heats in the immediate vicinity, which is where the bulk of their entries will come from, I doubt they'll even reach double figures for any of the heats.

Yip - That makes a lot of sense. Anyway there is no harm in sending in an entry and having a crack at making a little video. Might actually be interesting to use it as a development project for a new cartie design.

Just opened my pack. They dont require a video of the build that is just for an extra category of design award. Ready built carts most likely refers to commercially made and sold /off the shelf carts and not carts pre built for another event but a quick inquiry to screwfix should clear that up. Everything else seems as per usual except the tyre width of 50mm but no real problem there as my fronts are pretty chunky and a quick trip to Halfords (other suppliers can also be visited) should provide some chunky rears. All looking good except maybe ground clearance but I got in touch with my local venue and he reckoned 2 inches clearance should be ok.Blast!! I ve just read the rules again, 100mm ground clearance spec. Can I build a cart in 4 weeks ? Can anyone? Thats p***d on my chips a bit.

Have sent in Team Alford's entry for Cumbria and decided if at all possible to get going on a new build. This will be along the lines of Andy's new build for 2011 which seems to have worked well. Of course the design will be somewhat different from the present Runfree with increased ground clearance, shorter nose, higher roll bar and chunky tyres. ;D

Anyone know what 50mm wide tyres fit 20" rims and comply with screwfix requirements. Been into the local bike shops to check tyres but I think they are fed up of me asking questions they are suddenly all tying their sholeaces or picking up phone's when I walk through the door ;D

Chunky tyres that are 50mm+ do exist for 20 ins wheels . I ve got some on the front of mine . I got them off e bay and they ve got no markings so I cant help much there. I m going to have a go at getting something built as Im not going to mess with the existing cart the week before Dalby. We re quiet at work and a mate on the estate where our unit is has a mate who owns a bike shop and he reckons hes got two mountain bike scrappers in . So I m off there in a min. Maybe do a cut and shut with the two bikes or some thing more proper if time allows. I wonder how Screwfix feel about two bikes welded together. I mean its not a ready made ,is it?

Yes, I m aiming for the Cheshire event (its only an hour away) and if I cant get a cart built I ll transfer to the Cumbria.Had a good day scavanging bits for the new build ,so all looking good. The mate of a mate came good with the bike bits and frames. I ve now got two scrapper mountain bikes and a quick visit to the steel yard has provided the rest. Strap me, steels expensive. I normally get it from a mate who does construction but he s running around like a blue bottomed fly so I didnt like to bother him. I wanted to try and build this cart for under £100 but after the steel I ve only got about £40 left. I m going to have to buy four new tyres as the ones I ve got weigh in at 46mm width so I need to buy some new thicker ones. This is nt going to be a pretty cart by any means but it should handle the course ok. I dont see the courses as being super fast the problem is going to be more about strength and coping with bumps etc. So perhaps a Cairngorm speedster isnt whats needed. ( I may be wrong of course). Any one got any ideas for steering assembly using two bike forks?. I m toying with the idea of a steering bar but if time allows I'd like to use a rack and pinion or go-cart assembly I ll fill you all in at Dalby , hopefully with photos. See you all in the forest !
