Ive been thinking about that reply. Maybe its wrong of me (or Us?) to presume a certain amount of knowledge, I know that most of us at Gurston would have some idea of why 8mm axles might be good, and what they actually are in relation to bearing sizes. I had seen some theories on 10mm axles and things like that, but maybe more people are confused out there than i thought? Perhaps its wrong of me to laugh. What i'd hate to do is make it seem like the question was dumb. I ask a ton of stupid questions....and I'd hate to discourage people from asking them, or indeed replying. Some answers may be dumb, but I reckon a good forum whould be able to change things into a balanced discussion. We should be careful not to alienate ourselves to newbies. (and I see no sign of that happenning here so far I might add) What worries me is the answer showed a complete lack of knowledge bordering on ignorance.

Exactly! In this case, somebody is tring to run a business selling gravity sports equipment. If they are going to put themselves in a position where they are offering products, services, or advice - it is their responsibility to make sure that they are suitably well informed or qualified to do so. In this case - sadly, none of the above You are right Mike, we should not mock those who perhaps lack the specific knowledge - but given the number of times that we have all politely suggested that this particular proprietor should get a bit more experience before "jumping in at the deep end"... I simply cannot help but laugh at such appalling advice.

Just had a good look at the fore mentioned site and all the posts on the forum all 12 or whatever! I find it hard to beleive that people stumble across Marks site before ours or streetluge.net. Are we recognised on all the search engines or is it just other peoples good fortune that have taken them to Marks pages?

As no traffic has been directed to my site, and it is in it's infancy, I thought I would offer my "OPINION". If you have a better answer CONTRIBUTE!

Good one Mark, now if you'd like to ask the question here, or perhaps the excellent www.ncdsa.com trucks forum (where this has already been covered)., I'd hope you'll get some 'opinions' from people with knowledge, rather than guesses. For your info, normal bearings ARE 8mm (inside), just that axles tend to be imperial (as specced from the 'states.) An 8mm axle is a conversion that replaces the imperial axle, and means that your EXISTING bearings will fit, albeit more tightly, with no slop, leading to the bearings working as intended, ie the inside remains stationary. Secondly, at the time of modifying a bearing 'shoulder' can be added, and the nut tweaked, the axle shaft extended so that the bearings run entirely on the axle (not on the thread) and means you dont need speed ring washers. You do not need different wheels or bearings. Many riders think this makes the bearings run faster/smoother, and for longer. But as has been mentioned here you could still win on Abec1's on normal axles.....it all depends on a load of factors. Len the luge does a nice ine in coverted axles. Some of my US chums are converting bowlriding trucks to 8mm because they like the way they feel. Personnally I like 8mm axles for slalom racing, so carry it through to downhill. Its your choice, Try some first, then decide.

The great thing about Randal Luge trucks (which for some reason Mark forgot to mention in his insightfull view on what truck are good for Luge) is that it does have a proper 8mm axle. Comparing them to my 180s there is a suprising difference, though I havn't noticed anything whilr riding. I dunno if the Z-Rollers do as well, you have them Ben, is there any play? Joel

Gee I dont know i aint changed me bearings on me Z-rollers for ages. Its too much like hard work. I really wish me axles were the same as randal luge trucks with a slot for a screw driver. That would be much easier. Mark my above comment was purely because when people ask 'beginner' technical question you would think they would go to streetluge.net or streetluge.com to find an answer becasue thats the first thing you would type in when looking for a site. I know from experience yours aint the easiest site to find and was just wondering how easy this site is to find in comparision!

Mark i HAVE contributed by going to your website and asking if 8mm axles are any good ? unfortunately the answer i recieved was incorrect. You have the nerve to puta technical Q&A section on your forum when you clearly have absolutely no clue what you are talking about ! please at least have the common descency to admit you dont know or even better still remove the tech Q&A section altogether as it is an embaressment to gravity sports.

Was this a test of my knowledge, (MINIMAL) or a test of the forum's knowledge? [sigh]
