Oregon have just release a new helmet cam which has an optional GPS so you can record time, speed, location, elevation etc as you hurtle down the hill. It sounds pretty useful, although I've not actually tried one out yet. Click here for further details. (And if you decide to get one from Amazon and follow the link off the SCA web site, Scottish Carties will get some commission too. Which is nice.)

Spoke to Formula Gravity about Data Logging, they will try and get the Gadget Show to do a test of this camera with the GPS unit. On the subject of Data Logging, has anyone tried this unit? GLOBALSAT DG100 GPS DATA LOGGER About £50,,,,£52.86 here www.easydevices.co.uk/pp/GPS_Receivers/GPS_Tracker/GLOBALSAT_DG100_GPS_DATA_LOGGER.html(no stock, but more in stock next week) I'm told it records data down to 1 input/second, at that price I might have to buy one! The Scottish Cartie Association has just acquired one, so I'll publish a full review when I've tested it out. Should be very useful for surveying courses.

Every "job" has to have some perks! Look forward to seeing the results. Is there a way for the SCA to get commission from any Amazon purchase, or does it have to be set up on a individual item basis? Rich

If I understand it right, any purchase made after following an Amazon link off scottishcarties.org.uk earns the SCA a little commission, even if it isn't the specific item in the link.

The SCA has just acquired a DG-100 GPS Logger, and I've been giving it a bit of a test drive. First impression of the device itself is good and it seems to work pretty much as advertised. Resolution on the altitudes is 1m, which means you have to do some smoothing on it to avoid having a "stepped" altitude profile.
The software that comes with it is quite clunky, but there is an alternative open source version available. Unfortunately, this is a bit buggy too, although since I've got the source code I might have a go at fixing some of it. (It's in C#, in case you're interested.)

Hi Stephen, DG100: Does the supplied software work at all with google maps or whatever?
Would love to see some images/screen shots/ detail of the output.
Cheers Rich

Sort of. I'm still working it out. The software that comes with it stores data in "tracks" of 63 points. If the run is longer than that, you end up with multiple tracks. Unfortunately, I've only figures out how to display and export one track at a time, which is not tremendously useful. So far my impression can be best summed up as; device works. supplied software is quite sucky. third party open source stuff is better but still has issues. (I couldn't get the binary to work and had to compile the source myself - something that is going to be a bit beyond most I'm afraid).

It's frustrating cos it's so close to being what we want at an affordable price. But it's certainly not 'plug and play'!

Hi, I have just had word from the Official Global sat UK Distributor and the 'problem' has been passed onto their expert. I have been in touch with them for a while trying to do a quiet deal. They are very helpful and perhaps our expert could talk with theirs?

I'd be surprised if they want to put any time into it as it's quite an old product. Even the open source software stopped being developed a few years ago. It's not really a USB device either so you can't just read it like you can (e.g.) a camera. The native access seems to be via RS232 (serial comms) that are spoofed to work through a USB port. Ew.
