Well started the gravity sidcar build, and ive got a gravity bike, much to the amussment to the neighbours. Seems to handle ok for the brief test run. Comes in at approx 2.3m long. Need to do a bit more bracing and mount the proper seat. Seems strong enough which was a result.... ;D ;D Shutz Attachments:

Are you sure the rims are 1.75 ? That's wide!
If they are, I would say minimum tyre =20 x 1.95 or 2.00, 2.25 better or even 2.5 !
Kojaks, I have used , good, but way too small (in my opinion) for a 1.75 rim.

Rich, when i was looking for some bmx wheels most i looked at (under £30) came with this rim size where it was stated. I assumed this is a standard size? And when i found some 20" wheels that came with disc hubs i thought it was a right result Could you please tell me why the minimum size you stated is bigger than the rim (i have seen some schwalbe marathons 20 x 1.75) is there a reason for that? I was under the impression that you could go slightly under the width as well as over but didn't know by how much. Hope ive not ordered a pair of lemons!!! Cheers Shutz

They look spot on theres a fair few different types of slick type tyres available but the primos might be a goer. Like the psi rating.

Sorry if I caused any panic. Your (not) lemons will be OK!!!! You can fit any tyre that has the correct diameter, but if you're going to put strange loads on wheel/tyre combinations I think it's a good idea to stay near (if possible) what is considered the "normal" ? Sizing. A BMX 1.75 rim would normally have a BMX tyre, 1.95 or more. There's a lot of different opinions as to what's OK and what is not. The tyres you mention, Kojaks, I think are too small. The marathons at 1.75 would probably be fine. I'd rather have a 1.95 on that width of rim.(a bit over rim size) I wouldn't go under size. (see web sites below for some explanations) On skinny road wheels/tyres the 'normal' safe size is often quoted as rim size x 1.4 (min) , wider rims/tyres probably give much more margin. see here for some sizing info: www.sheldonbrown.com/tire_sizing.htmlwww.ctc.org.uk/desktopdefault.aspx?tabid=3802Cheers Rich

Rich, For a moment i thought i'd cocked up before i'd started...the crap weather dosen't help as i want to push on with the build but don't really fancy welding in the rain!!!! too much time figuring out what to do. Thanks for the explination and yes it makes sense to go a bit bigger due to the forces involved and i agree that for the first build best to err on the side of caution. so 1.95s it is then....

We run primo comets on the sideweasel, and the Cheats have Kojaks on theirs. I think both of us wish we had better grip in the wet. Certainly our front wheel can be a bit prone to letting go. I wouldn't run them racked right up as hard as they'll go either. We've both had blow outs on the sidecar wheel, and it's not much fun.

Maxxis Miracles look good to me too. We have a Maxxis Hookworm on the front at the moment, with Primo Comets on the rear and chair - it's what we had lying about when we built the outfit. We didn't find we were lacking grip in the rain at Dalby, but perhaps that's because we were running the Hookworm at the front. I'm now told that Hookworms are very slow, so we will probably splash out and invest in a Miracle to stick on the front for next year and keep the Hookworm for an emergency spare

Well done a little bit more, the seats all mounted and the frame seems rock solid. Its got about 130mm ground clearance. Need to make some disc hangers for the new wheels/brakes and do the sidecar next. the sidecar bit sould be easy enough i hope. Quick word of caution that i am sure youve all heard loads of times before its always a good idea to wear safety specs when chipping slag off the welds, i didn't and nearly got my eye...daft b****??d.
