With not much riding going on in the UK at the moment, and finally signing up for a YouTube account, I've posted up a video of Chamrousse from a few years ago - uk.youtube.com/watch?v=s7rA6JWK1WEWatch out for BOS's appearance!

Thats ace Graeme! Is your helmet cam done with an SD card? I was thinking of investing in one for eastbourne this year, but was going to go for a camera that plugs into a video camera for better quality, but me video camera aint got a AV in plug so may have to invest in a new one of them too! Whats the quality like on the SD cards?

That video was just done with a normal, old stills digital camera duct-taped to the chin-piece of my helmet (It would only take 6 minutes before the memory card was full). I've got a proper SD card helmet-cam now which is much better (and has sound - of sorts) - I've dumped my (fancy/expensive) camcorder/bullet cam set-up in my Caterham for it 'cos it's so easy. I got the Oregon ATC-2k for about £60 on eBay (about half the price of a decent bullet cam to plug into a camcorder) - there's a ATC-3000 model now but it's not really any better (word on the street is that the ATC-5000 will be much better). It's not quite broadcast quality but is certainly good enough to watch on a big telly. Have you seen "In Car 956"? There's a bit where Derek Bell gets overtaken at the Nurburgring and he comments "That's Jacky Ickx - he's much faster as he's not carrying a camera" (they were the size of a microwave in the 80s) - I always think of that bit when BOS goes by

Cheers for the info Graeme! So in your opinion the ATC- 3000 or the 5000 are good enough to edit into a video or do you think im best off with the whole camcorder and bullet cam set-up?

I go with a ATC2k (if you can get one significantly cheaper than a 3k) or a 3k. DRop me your postal address and I'll send a DVD of the type of footage I get.

Thanks for posting that Graeme, compelling stuff! Ah, the very best of times!
As for Chamrousse, rumour has it that Stef and the DDE (the people who organised Chamrousse) are having an entire year off this year, but will be back with a vengeance next year, including a Chamrousse-style event (i.e. downhill event starting at a ski resort).
I have some new very enthusiastic Turtle riders who are gagging to hit the alps with me next year!
