Im thinking about getting some grippier wheels for DH in my collection. I currently run big Blue Kryptos, Strikers or Lush Avalanches. Im pretty keen on the 76mm Flywheel, but not sure on the duro. Im a fan of 81a for most other abec 11 wheels but the 76mm Fly doesnt have much urethane depth. would I be wise to get a lower duro? thanks!

I would check out the new Seismic wheels. They do a 77mm Speed Vent in 75a duro. I tested some at Scammo on my luge. The course there is rough and slidy as hell, but these wheels provided so much grip. When they did let go they were nice and predictable. Last time at Scammo I was back on my 83mm, 79a Flys and they just were'nt as good.

i'm a big fan of gumballs these days! 76mm 75a
and also the pinks they're 77a
don't think they're making the pink gumballs anymore as the yanks see them as "gay" (grow up) but its a different type of urethane tlking to stridey, although the rest of the pink range is still running.
the new speed vents to look the smexy and would like to get a set of them for te 2008 season and ride them see what they're like.
on the other hand i love to run my 101mm flywheels on my stand up board as they're great for crusing/bombing round town! can roll over the anti-skate stuff, roll up small kerbs, over tigs/stick and also small children and old ladies!!

76mm Flys are best avoided - just not enough meat there. Even with a softer duro.
If you've grown up on Kryptos then its no surprise that you like the 81a Abecs, as they are pretty much the same duro as the blue kryps.
I'd go for some 78a flywheels in whatever size you fancy for a good all-round downhill wheel (Just not the 76mm though). 81a will be bit hard on anything but a perfect surface. If you really want a wheel about that 76mm size though, then do as will suggested and go for the gumballs. Loads of meat, nice & grippy. ;D
Ride hard, stay safe.

thanks for the pointers lads. Im not at all interested in 'traction' wheels like gumballs, avillas, vents et al. I cant get on with that style of wheel exept for doing slalom. So 76mm not enough meet eh? how does that effect the ride exactly? please elaborate.

There just is'nt enough urethane around the wheel to make it work properly, especially with a harder duro. They are quite "rattly" on anything but a perfect surface.
Think about an 85mm kryp by comparison, at about 81a (ish...) duro, it has a very tall deep tyre of urethane around the core - this tyre can distort from side to side, as well as absorb the vibrations from the road. Likewise, it'll keep gripping and gripping up to a point (While the tyre is distorting), before it finally lets go and breaks into a slide. This combination of a relatively hard duro, yet relatively grippy ride - followed by a predictable slide, are the qualities that many riders enjoy in a Krypto. That said, for every sliding Kryp fan, there is a grip-freak who hates them!
Flywheels on the other hand, are pretty much designed to be as grippy as possible right from the outset. Compated to the Kryps they are a much wider wheel, with a more stable core that prevents the urethane from wobbling around so much - and come in a range of softer duros for riders who are looking for grip, grip and more grip. Choosing the thinnest urethane, and the hardest duro kind of defeats the object of buying flys in the first place?
Given the above, and your sliding-riding-style - I'd ask you to think again, what is it that you want from some hard 76mm flys that an 80mm kryp won't already do better?
