Joel, I just watched the 'My Hill' video on your website... How can you preach about safety but luge on a narrow, winding road with cars coming up and down. Leathers and a helmet aren't going to save you from the effects of going under a car wheel! I don't know if the car behind is just a random car stuck behind you or if it's a safety car, whatever, there's a huge contradiction going on here. Bazil - www.sccstreetluge.co.uk

In fairness we did have a car infront of us (obviously) and me and the bitch were by no means going flat out or racing. The audi was miles behind us at the begining as we waited for a break in the traffic. But although all the right things were done it is setting the wrong example. Although we risk our own necks we dont want to inspire anyone else to do the same! Maybe it should be removed from the UKGSA website! Sorry Mikey i know you put alot of time into it! just a thought!

I dunno about removing it, but yes, we we arn't setting the best example. May be it could be re-edited to include a "Don't Try This At Home" message though. Like Ben said, we were hardly racing, let alone going fast. 1. We couldn't coz of Grahams crud driving 2. It was wet, 3. It wasnt a "Safe" road and 4. If we were I'd be miles in front Joel

Hello,
I think this raises a very good point. We have all done Private "bandit" runs.
Altough it must me said that the video on Joels website (and also on the UKGSA) is a hell of a lot safer than the SCC stuff. There's a difference between riding a hill fully kitted up and riding off ramps at thirty miles an hour wearing NOTHING (saftey wise that is).
But it does raise the point that the UKGSA needs to find a balance between saying NO! NO! NO! and Making sure people play safe and don't generate bad publicity for the sport.
A lot of experinced (been there, done that & seen mates hurt) riders are involved with the UKGSA. Maybe we should be using our infulence to make sure people know how to stay alive.
Cheers,
graham

There's a difference between riding a hill fully kitted up and riding off ramps at thirty miles an hour wearing NOTHING (saftey wise that is). Yes, you're totally right, there IS a difference between riding down a hill and riding off a ramp............ I'd rather hit a ramp at 30mph with no safety gear than hit a car wheel/bumper/side at 30mph. Maybe if I go over the ramp and Joel hits the car, we can compare notes? Seriously though, Joel, it being wet on that day is surely something you should have factored into the "is it safe to luge today?" equation??? Stopping at 30mph when the road is wet and greasy is pretty damn hard, I know from experience. This footage is a clear contradiction (in my opinion) of your safety rules, no matter what you were wearing. Graham - Yes, the UKGSA should practice consistency in your safety rule book... If anything, this video is something that could have a detramental (spelling?) impact on the future of UKGSA events, FAR more than that of our DVD (which has no mention or affiliation with any kind of luge/gravity sport association). Seeing as Joel is affiliated with your association, I think it would be wise to consider such videos before publishing them. I hope I don't sound like I'm trying to tell anyone what to do, and I hope you don't think I'm an arsehole for saying this... It's just that I was pretty pissed off seeing this footage after the huge amount of grilling we got from some of the footage on our website, which, to be fair, was all in a far safer environment! Suffice to say i think Joel has a lot more experience in riding in most types of road than does the SCC and knows perhaps more than most the inherent dangers of riding said environments. So in my opinion dont aggravate Joel too much about the video at least he's honest enough to hold his hands up and still debate the subject with honour still intact.
I dont think anybody should pontificate on safety issues as we've all thrashed hills in traffic and at high speeds but the crux of the matter is setting a bench mark on safety right now rather than pointlessly moan about what vidoes are where and what we do in them. Aye.

Aye. You have totally misunderstood my point; Joel rode this hill in highly unsafe conditions even though he apparently conforms to the IGSA rule book AND bangs on and on and on that the SCC are unsafe and bring a bad name to the sport... My point is this: MAKE A RULE AND BE CONSITANT WITH ITS ENFORCEMENT! This includes not uploading a video to the UKGSA official website that shows these rules being broken in a big way! As a side... I quote "...and knows perhaps more than most the inherent dangers of riding said environments." As I've said in previous posts... Knowing about dangers, wearing leathers, helmets, gloves etc is not going to save you from spanking yourself into a car. Bazil
