Hi Rob, well you can choose to get a local welder to knock you one up from plans, however I would either use existing plans or a slight modification rather than build something completely new. The best bet is to go and have a ride on a few different luges to get a feel on how the handle and what you want, come down to Gurston, there are always people willing to let you have a go on theirs. If money is not an issue then a Rogers Brothers luge from the states is a possibility, otherwise we have a crop of luge builders here in the UK. Joel King, Len the luge, Ding Boston, and Longy are all constructors who have race proven designs. But most important is that you can ride comfortably and safely.

I've got a luge spare if you are interested... A World Cup class racing machine, only been used twice:
Red Bull Almatrieb 2004 Chamrousse 2004
Choice of different wheels and hardware...
I'll post photos and specification here for you a.s.a.p.
Ride hard, stay safe.

That sounds cool! Talk to people who own a rogers bros luge about construction (i.e Tom W) cos copying one aint as easy as it looks, apparently!

I will be getting 12 luges built (hopefully) in time for NASS 2005 in July...... all I need are 12 deposits of £100! Balance of the £650 payable on dispatch.
It breaks down into 4 pieces, to fit in a holdall, and under the max baggage weight for air travel.
It will be fitted with Randal R2-180's and 80mm Krypto's too, so ready to roll, if anyone is interested?

£650!! Whoa! Isnt that a bit steep! You got any pictures of these luges Mark? I made both my metal luges for under £40 (without trucks or wheels) and they both do the job. Actually, technically my last luge was free! And then theres always wood! You cant go wrong with wood (buy british)

Can Email an image! ....can't seem to grasp how to get an image to display on here! Prototype only shown! (seen at Gurston Aug 04) MAYBE Will can add his comments as he rode it more than me! I have moddified the pan very slightly (narrower shoulder area)and production models will have a powder coated pan too!
I'm working on getting the prices down as we speak, but unless I get an order (or orders!) for 50 or more then the associated prices of small batch production apply. As it is MY outlay for the project (bearing in mind I'm not a "high earner") is somewhere in the region of £4000, and I have to recoup that if there is to be any further batches made. This is no "homebuilt" project, but a fully finished, ready to run/race, of the shelf product! Sorry, but thats life!
PS we are having to put getting a car on hold so this can work!

Eggs in one basket spring to mind! My advise is to buy a car! I think most people in this country who have the money to buy a luge would get one off Len the drunk. As i think his work out cheaper than £650 (this is due to the fact that he can get the materials easy enough and has the skill to do the work on them himself) Plus Len has proved his luges are quick, but i suppose that depends whos hands they are in! I can understand that it would cost that much to get luges made, but maybe you should consider holding back, weighing up the market and perfecting the design and some time down the line compete alongside the Rogers Bros in terms of luge construction! Just my thoughts on the subject! William do you care to comment on how Marks luge goes?

Oh, I should add that anyone who buys a Luge 'Stateside is welcome to use my shippers in LA. I'll charge cost for freight, should be about $1.50-75 a kilo.
Tom Worsely took this offer up when purchasing a Rogers bros luge. I think it came to £13.
Its ideal if you see one for sale in the US and you get frightened /put off by shipping. Land 4 day shipping costs to LA are reasonable. My Freight forwarders will consolidate it with my next shipment, and sort customs out for you.
sales@octanesport.com if you want to arrange this with me. TA!

Of course, if its for commercial purposes you can use your own shippers. And pay the admin charges, storage costs, and insurance too!
