I need some advice on axles.
I'm building my cart with 48 spoke BMX 20" wheels on the rear and 36 spoke 20" wheels on the front. For the front I have hubs from a wheelchair and they have 16mm axles so there shouldn't be a problem with being strong enough.
It's the rears that have me worried. I've removed the normal 10mm axles and the biggest dia bolt that fits the hub and a bearing race is 12.7 (half inch). If I use a solid stainless steel rod, 1 metre long x 12.7mm thick will it be strong enough? Total weight of cart + me will be under 170 kg.
The advantage to using a single rear axle is I can mount it in it's own bearings so it can rotate as well as the wheels. Less rolling resistance.
How do others mount their wheels and what size axles do they use?
Cheers
Paul

The wheels sound good, but I must admit I'm not clear how having a single axle saves rolling resistance. Personally I wouldn't go down that route as to keep it from flexing it'll need supporting in several places. I think if you have a single 1m+ x 12.7mm axle it is going to flex and bend quite alarmingly.
12.7mm solid mounted stub axles should be about right though, provided the chassis they are connected to is stiff enough and you're not going over any particularly rough surfaces.
