Hello there,
I am a Design Technology teacher in Leeds who also works as a teacher coordinator for the Royal Society of Engineers. I have been asked by the society to organise a competition that embodies the ethos of Science, Technology and Engineering for a cluster of up to 10 local schools. I was given the idea of a soap box challenge...who says engineering can't be fun?!
I anticipate the event to be a pretty low key one this time round and will comprise of up to ten teams, each given a small budget to make a working soapbox vehicle to race down a gentle slope with a few obstacles. Most (if not all) of the teams will be headed up by a technology teacher and have access to a standard school workshop with lathes, milling machines, CNC/laser cuters, vac formers and ferous welding/brazing facilities.
The reason for this post is to see if any of you guys might be able to help me with some simple questions about organising such an event and give me a bit of advice on making the vehicles. I'll try not to pester you too much but it would be nice to have a few people to chew over some ideas and the inevitable problem or two!
Many thanks in advance,
Drew

Hi Drew - I've organised a couple of races in my time. What do you need to know?

Hi Drew, I have also organised lots of events and I would be happy to have a chat with you.
You would also be welcome to use the rules and specifications we have written for Belchford Downhill Challenge as a basis for your competition. While they are not a universal formula, your competitors would probably find that they could run their vehicles at other event in the Leeds area, as these tend to use very similar rules to Belchford.
You will find the Belchford rules and regs on line by googling Belchford Downhill Challenge

Hi Drew, we are based in Leeds, Pudsey. Have been involved with building, racing and organising events for a number of years. The idea of getting local schools into soapbox racing has been discussed by us many times. We would be delighted to help you where ever we can.
