Off-road is a possibility we are looking at for a possible future event in the Belchford area. I have found a couple of reasonably smooth stone surfaced tracks that are both about 900 metres long with an average gradient of about 10%. We could also just run something on one of the big cereal fields round here after harvest. I have even seen a mountain bike event which used a course carved out of a growing wheat crop. The area of the crop that was destroyed to make the trackwas actually quite small, so with a bit of negotiation with a friendly farmer it may be possible to create a new track in high summer (whatever that it these days) at very little cost
A lot of the low-built carts may have problems with grounding on grass or stone courses, but with the right tyres fitted braking shouldn't be a problem, even on wet grass

Not sure about your confidence of braking hard on wet grass as at the Screwfix event the tyres simply removed the grass. I am not talking about a 10 - 15mph jolly but a cart doing 28 - 40mph going into a tight banked corner. As to grounding out I would hope the course would be built to accommodate most of the carts running on tarmac. A ground clearance of 3.5" would probably be the minimum if there was much bodywork in front of the front axles.

I still think the right tyres will be key - I often get my mountain bike up to 30+ mph on grass and loose surfaces. It stops well with decent 2.25" section knobbly tyres running at the right pressure (about 28psi on the front and 30psi on the rear.

Thanks for that Organgrinder, personal experience tops guessing any day of the week. Race order will be numerical so as a thank you we will allocated No1 to your cart. ;D
