Think Tom was talking about the skill of taking corners in general not just at Gurston!

15-20mph? Surely if you're any good, you can get faster?

Any corner has an optimum speed at which it can be taken. A long, sweeping corner can be taken at full whack. A 110 degree, 3-4m wide corner like this can be taken at aprox. 15-20mph (Stand-Up and G-Bikes can go a bit faster). You can take it faster if you want, but as I said before, you'll very quickly become a lawn mower.
This is why there are so many photos of people crashing here, get it wrong and it punishes you. Now before I put off any novices wanting to come and have a go I'd like to mention that there is a nice wide verge which slows you down quickly and safely, making it great for beginners.
Come along, give it a go

Honestly - who cares what relative 'speeds' are achieved. Do Luges come fitted with speedometers? No. Speed is simply a relative unit of measure, used by Cops to impose fines, and quoted by downhill riders (in usually vastly inflated terms) to impress their mates down the pub. Racing is my lanugage, you can go as 'fast' as you like - but talk to me about First place, Second Place and Third place - and then I will listen. Winning is everything. Ride hard, stay safe. Tom W. P.S. Joel - Only homosexuals brake into the second corner.

Amen to that! Its the positions that count 1st being the best and second being the first of the losers! What does that make third then Joel! hahahahaha!

Where did you get the laser timing from, surely there is a well easy way to time a run with out the need for lasers and well expensive equipment... and errrr yeah winning is everything but since gurston is a time trail the speed in the corner is everything...

Yeah that's all very well to say, but with that logic, racing round the zig zag in Bristol at 5mph should be fun.............. It most certainly ain't!
If I'm not hitting a corner at at least 30mph, I'm not hitting the corner, fullstop!

hi ukgsa... But unrelated this, but I was wondering if the Gurston events are the kind of thing where you can turn up to have a bit of fun - ie trying to slide/carve/flow my way to the bottom rather than full on racing? I'm trying to find somewhere to practice and up my skills and experience... -before going too full on...
PS I was the guy making all the farting noises sliding my way down IOW on the practice day.

definatly! it isn't hugely wide, 3m?, but the stand-up boys, wookie especially, love to do a bit of sliding. The corners are tricky though. Stridey or J usually bring along some cones and set them up as well, if that's your bag.
Hope to see u there
