hello im toying around with ideas and looking for some advise on what's the best way to build a cart to take on some of the fast carts in the uk my first try was the worst thing in the world and ran a 63.3 where as the carts I was racing against were make it in the 20's so any advise would be greatly appreciated

Theres lots of help available at the Scottish Carties website. Basically though, good aerodynamics, good bearings and good geometry seem to be the most important aspects o deal with. Have a good look at photos of other carties especially the ones in medal placings.

the Scottish cartie website forum won't let me make an account and plus both these forums seem to be dead I thought about doing a gravity quad bike sort of thing and then I was trolling through the internet and and found this

Okay... so you can still check out photos of other peoples carts , that should give you plenty of ideas as to what works. A visit to an event is a great idea , its what I did when I started, most people are happy for you to take pics if you as nicely. The cart pic you have shown is very basic with lots of details missing but is a starting point. Heres a few thoughts Wheels... 20 inch BMX s are very popular as they are readily available. if you are going to go for a stub axle you need at least a 14mm spindle, 10mm will bend. Brakes , discs are good but slightly harder to fit ,calipers are easier to fit but require extra steel work. Some people just use one set but I m happier with belt and braces and have brakes on all four wheels. There are a number of ways of sorting out the steering. I used a go cart assembly with a trailing arm set up. get this geometry right,it makes a difference. You will find details online.. google Ackerman steering. Set your cart up with a bit of 'castor' on the steering , this will be explained in the Ackerman post. Build it to regs as posted in Scottish Carties ,these are the regs most widely used but there are variations. Suspension can be good but take your time and get it right. I should know I made a horlicks of mine and it came back to bite me. I m not bothering with it on my next cart. Anyhoo there are a few thoughts. All of this and more is available somewhere on the net . Ill try and find some links for you. Where abouts are you?

Three wheels would restrict the amount of places you could enter to the more "fun run" types of event rather than the competitive type , check out the scottishcarties.org.uk/ for more info on soapbox construction and usage rules .

If you want, quick easy access to gravity racing the simplest way is a gravity bike. cheap and easy to build and more fun than a barrel load of monkeys. They can be entered at most events. I ve been racing mine this season and its just great fun. They can be almost free to build but even a fairly showey one neednt cost mush. David at Mutts Nutts was selling his ,thats a top of the range jobby.

Yes that was a bargain ! the raw materials must have cost me more like £250 when i built it , my son an i raced it for a season all over the country, i used to carry it to events on the roofrack of my 406 ,two of us cold easily lift it on , have fun ! If you would like to see the build pictures have a look on my facebook ( Mark Fleetwood) there is a whole album with pics at every stage of build
