This is an old dicussion about tilting 3 wheelers (like what my pa made, see message at end...) The crucial bit, for me is "Although one of the 3-wheelers could be easily overturned, the best 3-wheeler was better than the best 4-wheeler. In summary, a properly engineered 3-wheeler can be made as stable as a properly engineered 4-wheeler." So, in theory, a three wheeler can handle just as well, but would have lower rolling resistance and less aerodynamic drag than a 4 wheeler ! autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/tilting/message/9?l=1More background info here, a list of 3 wheeler (Human powered...) www.maxmatic.com/ttw_links_mchpttw.htm

I reckon three wheelers - tilting or otherwise - should be a separate class. Gravity Trike, perhaps.

There's nothing wrong with trikes. They just aren't carties.
We allowed three wheelers the first year at Catterline, and they dominated the competition. We changed the rules for the next year to require four wheels, and two of the "trikes" re-appeared with three wheels at the back. They're fast, stable, handle really well and are still putting in competitive times.

Dont most rules require wheels to fitted in pairs opposite to each other ? ( or some such wording)

Some do. Some don't.

I saw a picture of one once, but can't remember where. I'll see if I can find it again.

There was one that competed at Goodwood a few years back, but i can't find a pic of it. Don't know how succesful it was either.
I think some recumbents are tilting three wheelers.
Regarding trikes - the only way they are going to be integrated into events is to organise some events yourself and then see if event organisers will include them. The problem we are now having is that there may not be enough places at some events i.e. CSE where demand outstrips supply.

Some events already allow them.
If there was enough interest we could integrate them easily enough, in pretty much the same way we did for sidehacks - i.e. draw up a draft tech' spec' for discussion, revise it until everyone is happy(ish) and then publish it and invite people to build to that spec'. Run a few as a non-competitive demo/test at a few events and revise as necessary then publish final version and allow event organisers to decide if they want to run that class.

Anything wrong with this basic outline for Trikes?
Vehicle to be of tricycle configuration: Two Front/One Rear wheel or One Front/Two Rear wheels
Maximum total length - 2500mm Maximum total width - 1200mm Minimum track width - 700mm Maximum weight of vehicle including any ballast - 75kg Wheel size: Any Brakes: Minimum of Two acting on the same axle

Whoa there big fella - you missed out the first question...
Is there enough interest?
No point going to a lot of effort if it's just you wanting to race one.

I didn’t so much miss the first question I just ignored it, hoping no one would notice. But you did! ;D
Personally I’m not that concerned if there is an official Trike class or not, as long as events like Border Bogies and Richards Castle continue to allow me to run the Trike. I do think that if there were official rules then others would build Trikes and it may encourage yet more people to get involved in Gravity Racing. See your own comments regarding the first year at Catterline, when there was obviously some interest.
Cheers Rich

The three wheeler I built for the red bull race at Leeds was a three wheeler, had a Honda 50 front forks in the back, so suspension and brakes. Proved very comfy and went well. Sold it now but have half built another with the single wheel in front, mountain bike forks(suspension and good brakes) and dutch tilting mechamism in rear. Might even finish one day !

Had an email from a chap who’s interested in building a Trike to compete at BB2011 ;D One more Trike. This could take a long time!
